A Leaf of Yggdrasil
Welcome to Kergol, a galaxy-sized Leaf beaming with advanced civilizations spreading from star system to star system and fending off the Twilight Scourge. As with all Leaves of the World Tree, we enter through a Terminal Point, which happens to be the starting planet of Lupsis.
It’s been roughly 2,000 years since man (the Ninlei) have left the confines of their star system and began branching out across the stars. They have since encountered three other cooperative Races, though not always without some trials, they call the Yolei, Akulei, and Gorolei, with whom they have formed the Kergol Alliance. The Alliance has under its influence now exactly 168 star systems, many originally colonized by them and some with their own local, more primitive Races that have agreed to join them for their own protection and flourishing.
It typically isn’t hard for the Alliance to convince locals to join, because aside from the more aggressive Races out amongst the stars, there is also an enigmatic plague that festers throughout the Realm. At first, the Ninlei thought it was something unique to their homeworld, but everywhere they go, and everyone they meet has been suffering from the same pests. They call them the Darkbrood; malignant beasts that seemingly appear from nowhere and can ravage entire civilizations. They can range anywhere from the size of small animals to that of moving mountains, though the latter is thankfully a rarity. No one has ever found their nests or knows how they come to be, but you can be sure that if there is life around, the Darkbrood will be as well. As it seems, the more life succeeds, and the more mankind spreads out, the more aggressive and powerful the Darkbrood becomes.
In most campaigns, you are likely a licensed public contractor for KAOS [Kergol Alliance Operational Service], the military security that defends the free peoples who have agreed to live peacefully in Kergol Space. Although there are four populous Races that work together in harmony, you may find that many of the creatures in this Realm are hostile to the Alliance. While most of KAOS is constantly deployed to handle threats like the Twilight Scourge, they rely on public contractors like you to fill in the gaps in between. Your lot tends to handle bounties, service calls from citizens, detective work, and more. For the most part, you are allowed to operate as you please, taking assignments around your availability, since there is a surplus of public contractors. The only mandatory service that comes with your license is attending to emergency outbreaks when they appear.
So go out, conquer the stars, and help mankind and their allies flourish against the forces that would see them otherwise extinct!
