Often considered a type of Vampire, as they can choose to resemble recently deceased women as a disguise to help find their prey, Estries are actually naturally born, blood-sucking Demons (as opposed to the curse of Vampirism) who are members of the greater Harpy family, like Succubi or Strix. It was long thought they needed to consume blood for survival, leading to the Vampiric beliefs, but they can be sustained purely from Madness. They do use blood to replenish and heal themselves when outside their realm, which includes needing it for their ability to transubstantiate between corporeal and ethereal form for movement across realms.
Estrie aren’t particularly strong as far as demons go, even being the weakest foot soldiers for the Prince of Lust, Asmodeus. While easily powerful enough to kill a human in hand-to-hand combat, they could be taken down by multiple men or maybe even a single sufficiently armed man. They would probably also be killed in a bear encounter, though that could likely go either way. Having this fragility, they have adapted purely as an ambush predator. The drawback is that corporealizing takes so much energy that they can’t reverse the process if they fail to feed. Though even the smallest amount of blood will cause them to at least slowly regenerate. The only known ways to put them down for good are to either bury them with dirt filling their mouths so no blood may enter, decapitate them, or incinerate the entire body.
Estries are often seen as an entry-level task for many hunters to see if they are ready to handle the job of exterminating dangerous fiends. In that same manner, The Metal once took a job to kill an Estrie purely to see if he had become strong enough to take one out with his bare hands. He did. Though he kept lying to his team by calling it a Succubus the entire time, likely because killing a higher-order Demon like a Succubus would be much more impressive than an Estrie. It is estimated that there are currently fourteen quintillion Estries in the universe, so you have plenty to hunt if you can lure them out.
